Eine Ausstellung von Technopolitics über den Zeitenwandel
Mit dem im MAK FORUM kuratierten Wissensraum „Tracing Information Society“ will Technopolitics die eingefahrenen Diskurse über die Chancen und Gefahren der Digitalisierung aufbrechen.

Openness -- the ability to use, share and transform information -- is a key aspect for social innovation and for finding ways out of the current crises. Frist, we need new ways of collaborating and integrating the intellectual capacities of a wider range of people. Second, we need to transform the way the state works and, third, we need a new relationship to nature. All three are technology and data-intensive processes, and we need to fight against restrictions through copyright, the closure of proprietary data and outmoded separation of nature from culture.
But this is not enough. Technology alone will not save us, We can easily imagine all of this realized through newly authoritarian regimes based on surveillance, manipulation and new ecological racism. Thus, we need to think about the social institutions through which we want to realize these technological potentials.

Openness – Offenheit, die Fähigkeit, Information zu nutzen, zu teilen und zu bearbeiten – ist ein Schlüsselkonzept für soziale Innovation und bietet den Ausweg aus den gegenwärtigen Krisen. Wir brauchen erstens neue Arten und Weisen der Zusammenarbeit und der Integration der intellektuellen Fähigkeiten einer breiteren Auswahl von Menschen. Zweitens müssen wir staatliches Handeln grundlegend transformieren und drittens brauchen wir ein neues Verhältnis zur Natur. Alle drei Veränderungsprozesse sind technologisch anspruchsvoll und datenintensiv. Deshalb müssen wir gegen urheberrechtliche Einschränkungen, die Kontrolle und Einschließung proprietärer Daten und die überholte Trennung von Natur und Kultur kämpfen.

In the framework of the Authorship project, Akademie Schloss Solitude together with former and current fellows initiates a debate on the status of the author in the 21st century as well as closely related questions on the copyright system. The event »Custodians.online – The Struggle over the Future of ›Pirate‹ Libraries and Universal Access to Knowledge« is part of the debate by which the Akademie offers its fellows to articulate diverse and already long existing positions regarding this topic.
The potential to achieve universal access to knowledge and culture has expanded immensely through digital networks, making it possible for much of the world’s population to retrieve the most recent scientific output. However, the copyright regulation has largely continued to operate on the grounds of exclusion, thus allowing industries to harness digital technologies to bar access and to extract vast profits. Nowhere is that more evident than in academic publishing, a 10 billion dollar global industry, with the result that whoever has no access to wealthy academic institutional libraries has no other option but to seek access in disregard of the law.

Das kontinentaleuropäische Konzept der Autorschaft als Schöpfung literarischer oder künstlerischer Werke und dem damit verbundenen Anspruch auf geistiges Eigentum hat seinen Ursprung im England des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts und der französischen Revolution.
Seitdem wird der Autor nicht mehr als nur einer unter zahlreichen anderen Handwerkern betrachtet, der an der Schaffung eines Werks beteiligt ist: Mit der autonomen Erschaffung von Ideen und Texten kam dem Autor eine besondere Funktion im Produktionsprozess zu. Der Originalitätsstatus fungierte seither als Grundlage legislativer Maßnahmen zum Schutz autorschaftlicher Leistung, die sowohl eine Deformierung der Werke als auch deren wirtschaftliche Ausbeutung verhindern sollte.
