Panel Discussion, Elevate Festival, 2014
In this panel conversation the various topical threads of Elevate's discourse programme will be brought together. Starting with an analysis of the current situation, tangible paths into a solidary future will be discussed. Representatives of different perspectives will talk about the required socio-ecological change, the possible makeup of future societies, and the necessary steps to create them.

Das heutige Internet bietet „out-of-the-box“, und dazu noch meistens kostenlos, sehr viel Organisationsfähigkeit an. Alles ist leicht zugänglich und leicht zu benutzen, aber dennoch erstaunlich effektiv und ermöglicht Menschen und Handlungen in einer Masse zu organisieren, für die noch vor kurzem eine große, teure bürokratische Organisation notwendig gewesen wäre.

Die Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung hat so eben hier Dossier Wikipedia aufgeschaltet. Es enthält über 20 Beiträge zu den Themen: Geschichte / Machtstrukturen / Globalisierung von Wissen / Journalismus / (Politische) Bildung / Wissenschaft.

Die Freiheit der freier Kultur

Als eine erste Annäherung, um den Charakter eines "freien" Projekts zu beurteilen, kann es also hilfreich sein, sich zu fragen, wie der Handlungsspielraum der Nutzer und der Produzenten innerhalb des Projekts konfiguriert ist. Welche Möglichkeiten haben sie, zwischen den verschiedenen Rollen zu wechseln? Wer bestimmt die Regeln und deren Anwendung? Diese Fragen wiederum haben sowohl juristische wie auch technische Dimensionen, und sie sind in konkrete organisatorische und kulturelle Praktiken eingebettet.

The New Media Reader (NYU Press) is now available online in full (pdf, epub etc), under a CC license. Consequently, it also includes my contribution "Between democracy and spectacle. The front and the back of the social web", which has been online since here on this blog since May. But more importantly, it also contains all others. A great collection of texts! Grab it.

With the rise of web 2.0 and social media platforms taking over vast tracts of territory on the internet, the media landscape has shifted drastically in the past 20 years, transforming previously stable relationships between media creators and consumers. The Social Media Reader is the first collection to address the collective transformation with pieces on social media, peer production, copyright politics, and other aspects of contemporary internet culture from all the major thinkers in the field.

Here's my response to David Bollier's talk "The Great Value Shift - And What It Means for "Memory Institutions" at the "Economies of the Commons" conference today (11.10.) in Amsterdam. My main concern here is to rethink the relationship between markets, public institutions and the commons, in a way that public archives and commons can thrive and there is still opportunities for real entrepreneurs to innovate.

Thank you, David, for this very inspiring talk, and I think I could agree with everything you said. But I tripped over a seemingly innocuous formulation, one that have used myself repeatedly: the commons are beyond markets and states.

I think we need to be more precise here. We need to ask how the commons relate to the market and to the state, that is is, to public institutions. And, in relation to archives and libraries, we need to ask what is their relation, as public institutions, to the commons.

Let me first make a theoretical point, and then, don't worry, I will return to archives.

The commons is not beyond the market and the state, rather, it is complementary to both.

We are very happy and proud to announce the publication of our new book: Cultures and Ethics of Sharing / Kulturen und Ethiken des Teilens, edited jointly by Wolfgang Sützl, Felix Stalder, Ronald Maier, Theo Hug. It is a bilingual (English/German) collection of papers on empirical and theoretical aspects of sharing, both on-line and off-line. Some papers develop quite optimistic perspectives, but others show also how activities of sharing can be captured by very problematic interests. They all manage to highlight the richness of sharing in social setting and the wide-ranging questions a focus sharing brings to the fore.

Thanks a lot to all contributors to this unusual, because truly multi-disciplinary effort. We would also like to thank Innsbruck University Press for making available the book in full as free download (2mb).

This is a volume of essays about sharing. Few people could have predicted that practices of sharing would gain such prominence in contemporary society. It is, arguably, one of the most unexpected developments of the early 21st century. Surprising, but not inexplicable. Over the last decade, numerous developments have taken place that created conditions under which new practices could flourish and the roles of sociability and sharing are being re-examined. For example, the very idea of man and woman as homo economicus, that is creatures that will naturally gravitate towards the pursuit of narrow self-interest and, thus, the need of society to organize itself as to make productive use of this supposed essential characteristic, has been called into question with renewed vigor.

Auf dem “Netz für alle”-Kongress der Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung / Linken Bundestagsfraktion hat Felix Stalder die Einführungskeynote mit dem Titel “Digitale Solidarität. Perspektiven der Netzpolitik” gehalten. Mit seiner freundlichen Genehmigung veröffentlichen wir die Rede als Gastartikel und Debattenbeitrag.

Wir stehen vor einer historischen Chance, neue Formen solidarischen Handeln zu erfinden. Das politisch-ökonomische System in Europa, aber auch darüber hinaus, steckt in einer tiefen Krise. Diese hat viele Gründe. Einer davon ist, dass sich im Kern der avanciertesten Bereiche der Ökonomie ein Widerspruch verschärft. Auf der einen Seite haben wir die zunehmende Bedeutung der Momente der sozialen Interaktion, des Austauschs, des vernetzen Wissens- und Handelns, auf der anderen Seite haben wir eine sich verschärfende Logik der privaten Aneignung dieser gemeinsam hervorgebrachten Werte. Während die eine Seite sich immer wieder der Aneignung zu entziehen versucht, und mit freien Lizenzen auch teilweise Mittel gefunden hat, das zu tun, sucht die andere nach immer neuen Wegen, um Wissen und Kultur zu privatisieren und läuft Gefahr, damit die Voraussetzungen für neue die Entsehung neuen Wissens und neuer Kultur zu zerstören. Es wird sich noch herausstellen, ob wir es hier mit einem Widerspruch zwischen Produktions- und Eigentumsformen zu tun haben, den Karl Marx als Voraussetzung für einen Wechsel in der Produktionsweise diagnostizierte. Es ist denkbar, aber sicher ist das nicht.
