I just finished my talk at Former West, a contemporary art research, education, publishing, and exhibition project (2008–2014). Below are my slides. The talk was also recorded. Perhaps it will be made available later. Nothing I can influence.

The New Media Reader (NYU Press) is now available online in full (pdf, epub etc), under a CC license. Consequently, it also includes my contribution "Between democracy and spectacle. The front and the back of the social web", which has been online since here on this blog since May. But more importantly, it also contains all others. A great collection of texts! Grab it.

With the rise of web 2.0 and social media platforms taking over vast tracts of territory on the internet, the media landscape has shifted drastically in the past 20 years, transforming previously stable relationships between media creators and consumers. The Social Media Reader is the first collection to address the collective transformation with pieces on social media, peer production, copyright politics, and other aspects of contemporary internet culture from all the major thinkers in the field.

We are very happy and proud to announce the publication of our new book: Cultures and Ethics of Sharing / Kulturen und Ethiken des Teilens, edited jointly by Wolfgang Sützl, Felix Stalder, Ronald Maier, Theo Hug. It is a bilingual (English/German) collection of papers on empirical and theoretical aspects of sharing, both on-line and off-line. Some papers develop quite optimistic perspectives, but others show also how activities of sharing can be captured by very problematic interests. They all manage to highlight the richness of sharing in social setting and the wide-ranging questions a focus sharing brings to the fore.

Thanks a lot to all contributors to this unusual, because truly multi-disciplinary effort. We would also like to thank Innsbruck University Press for making available the book in full as free download (2mb).

This is a volume of essays about sharing. Few people could have predicted that practices of sharing would gain such prominence in contemporary society. It is, arguably, one of the most unexpected developments of the early 21st century. Surprising, but not inexplicable. Over the last decade, numerous developments have taken place that created conditions under which new practices could flourish and the roles of sociability and sharing are being re-examined. For example, the very idea of man and woman as homo economicus, that is creatures that will naturally gravitate towards the pursuit of narrow self-interest and, thus, the need of society to organize itself as to make productive use of this supposed essential characteristic, has been called into question with renewed vigor.

Auf dem “Netz für alle”-Kongress der Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung / Linken Bundestagsfraktion hat Felix Stalder die Einführungskeynote mit dem Titel “Digitale Solidarität. Perspektiven der Netzpolitik” gehalten. Mit seiner freundlichen Genehmigung veröffentlichen wir die Rede als Gastartikel und Debattenbeitrag.

Wir stehen vor einer historischen Chance, neue Formen solidarischen Handeln zu erfinden. Das politisch-ökonomische System in Europa, aber auch darüber hinaus, steckt in einer tiefen Krise. Diese hat viele Gründe. Einer davon ist, dass sich im Kern der avanciertesten Bereiche der Ökonomie ein Widerspruch verschärft. Auf der einen Seite haben wir die zunehmende Bedeutung der Momente der sozialen Interaktion, des Austauschs, des vernetzen Wissens- und Handelns, auf der anderen Seite haben wir eine sich verschärfende Logik der privaten Aneignung dieser gemeinsam hervorgebrachten Werte. Während die eine Seite sich immer wieder der Aneignung zu entziehen versucht, und mit freien Lizenzen auch teilweise Mittel gefunden hat, das zu tun, sucht die andere nach immer neuen Wegen, um Wissen und Kultur zu privatisieren und läuft Gefahr, damit die Voraussetzungen für neue die Entsehung neuen Wissens und neuer Kultur zu zerstören. Es wird sich noch herausstellen, ob wir es hier mit einem Widerspruch zwischen Produktions- und Eigentumsformen zu tun haben, den Karl Marx als Voraussetzung für einen Wechsel in der Produktionsweise diagnostizierte. Es ist denkbar, aber sicher ist das nicht.

Ein kurzes Interview auf irghts.info zu neuen Praxis von Google, Seiten die mit vielen Urheberrechtsbeschwerden eingedeckt werden, im Ranking nach hinten zu verbannen.

Für die Sondernummer "Auf der Suche nach Utopia" der Zeitschrift "Indes" (Göttinger Institut für Demokratieforschung) habe ich mich auf die Suche an der dem Internet innewohnenden Utopie begeben.

Die Zeitschrift ist leider im wesentlichen nicht frei zugänglich. Habe aber im Vorfeld darauf bestanden, dass mein Artikel online gestellt wird und nun ist gibt es ihn auch als schön gestaltetes PDF.

Es wird sich dann zeigen, daß die Welt längst den Traum von einer Sache besitzt, von der sie nur das Bewußtsein besitzen muß, um sie wirklich zu besitzen. (Karl Marx, Brief an Max Ruge, September 1843)

Träumt auch das Internet von einer Sache, von der es nur Bewusstsein erlangen muss, um sie wirklich zu besitzen? Ich denke, man kann zumindest den ersten Teil diese Frage sinnvollerweise mit Ja beantworten, ohne gleich in die Sackgasse des Anthropomorphismus oder Determinismus einzubiegen. Dieser Traum wurde und wird in Internet-typischer Art von vielen, gleichzeitig und zeitlich verschoben, höchst unterschiedlich geträumt. Doch über alle Differenzen hinweg verdichten sich darin immer wieder zwei durchaus widersprüchliche Figuren: Autonomie und Kooperation. Wie für Träume üblich, sind ihre Konturen unscharf und instabil. In ihnen verschränken sich gemachte Erfahrungen in oftmals unvorhersehbarer Weise und artikulieren sich neu. Gleichzeitig stoßen sie neue Erfahrungen an, denn spätestens seit Freud wissen wir, dass Träumen, Erleben und Handeln ein Kontinuum darstellen.

Abstract: Everyday experiences of networked society oscillate between processes of intensified control (Facebook, data retention, profiling) and new niches of autonomy (Wikileaks, Anonymous, commons-based peer production). Where does this contradictoriness of the networks come from? What can we do to expand the niches of autonomy without facilitating the processes of control?

As more of our data, and the programs to manipulate and communicate this data, move online, there is a growing tension between the dynamics on the front (where users interact) and on the back (to which the owners have access). If we look at the front-end, the social web, or Web2.0, may well advance semiotic democracy, that is, “the ability of users to produce and disseminate new creations and to take part in public cultural discourse” (Stark, 2006). If we consider the back-end, however, may just as well turn into Spectacle 2.0, new forms of control and manipulation, masked by a mere simulation of involvement and participation, creating the contemporary version of what Guy Debord (1967: § 6) called “the heart of the unrealism of the real society.” Both of these scenarios are currently being realized. Yet, how these relate to one another, which is dominant in which situation and for which users, is not yet clear and likely to remain highly flexible. The social meaning of the technologies is not determined by the technologies themselves, rather it will be shaped and reshaped by how they are embedded into social life, advanced, and transformed by the myriad of individual actors, large institutions, practices, and projects that constitute contemporary reality.
